Every person is entitled to have their own preferences and opinions. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean one can avoid discrimination. A lot of people will judge for the simple choices that you make — even if it was just choosing a particular hairstyle.
In our conservative society, a woman is expected to have long hair. If a girl sports her hair short, then people will perceive her as a lesbian. This is a recurring circumstance that Jasmine Brosas Araneta experiences.
Jasmine is often mistaken for a gay man or a lesbian woman because of her short hair. The way she cut her locks was unmistakably noticeable, because, typically, only a man would style their hair like she did. The negative reaction and comments that she received from random strangers whenever she went out finally took their toll on her.
Jasmine wrote a long Facebook post detailing what people thought of her short hair. She shared some instances wherein she was thought to be of a completely different gender.
The first scenario was about two girls. The first one said, “Ang ganda naman ni ate! (She’s so beautiful).” The other one replied, “Ay nako, bakla naman yan eh! (She’s gay!).”

The second one was when she offered her seat while riding public transportation. She offered her seat to a pregnant woman. The people from the other side took her action differently and concluded that she was probably a man and it was his duty to sacrifice her seat.
The final experience she shared was when she was with her boyfriend. He was mistaken for being in a relationship with a gay man. She would hear from others, “Buti nalang maganda yung bakla. (Good thing the gay is beautiful).”
Jasmine added photos of herself on her viral post. She said that her main point is that people should not stereotype or judge others based on their appearance. Short hair is not only meant for guys. She even joked about just shaving her entire head bald.
She said cutting your hair short does not mean that you are moving on, being rebellious, relieving stress, or coming out of the closet.

She also said that she has nothing against the LGBT community. She was unhappy with the misconceptions that come with her short hair.
